The statement should read:
Effective October 1, 1998 (and retroactively), the Microsoft
Certified Professionals certification requirements changed. The
earlier requirement required the successful completion of an
exam based on a Windows server or desktop operating system. Now
a candidate becomes a MCP on passing any current Microsoft exam,
with the single exception of Networking Essentials (70-058).
This change is retroactive to anyone ever passing any current
Microsoft exam except Networking Essentials.
