On this errata page will appear comments and notes that are not technically errata. Rather, if anything would cause us to write the book differently, if we were writing it now, we will try to provide you that information here. Therefore, changes in the testing environment instituted by Microsoft, updates, clarifications, amplifications, and errata will all appear on this page.

Microsoft Exam 70-073

Windows NT Workstation 4.0

Errata

[Accelerated MCSE Windows NT 4.0 Workstation Errata] page 8 "Microsoft Certified Professionals (MCPs)"

The first statement below is now incorrect:
Microsoft Certified Professionals get their certificates by passing a Microsoft exam based on a Windows server or desktop operating system.

The statement should read:
Effective October 1, 1998 (and retroactively), the Microsoft Certified Professionals certification requirements changed. The earlier requirement required the successful completion of an exam based on a Windows server or desktop operating system. Now a candidate becomes a MCP on passing any current Microsoft exam, with the single exception of Networking Essentials (70-058). This change is retroactive to anyone ever passing any current Microsoft exam except Networking Essentials.

The Windows NT 4.0 Workstation exam (70-073) is now an adaptive test. In October 1998 Microsoft introduced a new examination methodology called adaptive testing for the Windows NT 4.0 Workstation exam. Rather than always presenting 51 questions, a shorter series of moderate to difficult questions are asked.

When a wrong answer is given, the candiate then receives one or more simpler questions probing their understanding of that content area. By answering 15 or 25 tough questions correctly, a candidate can pass the exam with a much smaller number of questions overall.

With adaptive testing, however, you may not mark a question to return to it later. You must complete each question as it is presented. You cannot go back to reconsider a previous question. Therefore, you should be absolutely sure you are finished with each question before moving on.

Further developments in adaptive testing are expected. Information is available from Microsoft at this address: http://www.microsoft.com/MCP/articles/tesinn.htm
Also, read our review of adaptive tests and what they mean to MCSE candidates.

Compuserve has re-named the target site, and the old command still works:

GO MSEDCERT is obsolete

GO MEC is better and correct
